In March, at the NSSGA Annual Membership Meeting and Board of Directors Meeting, Seth Hankowski of All States Materials Group took the reins of the NSSGA Leadership as the 2023 Board Chair. Based in western Massachusetts, All States Materials Group is a building materials and construction company, focusing on aggregates, HMA, concrete and liquid asphalt.

Through a new promotional video, NSSGA members got to learn more about Hankowski and his family business, All States Materials Group, where he serves as senior vice president. As a small producer, they are vital throughout the New England region, providing job opportunities and resources. The video shot at one of their locations demonstrates the work done every day that Hankowski oversees. It also showcases the critical materials that the aggregates industry provides for our nation.

Raised in his family’s business and doing his share of construction-related jobs while in school, Hankowski didn’t start with a career in the aggregates industry. After attending college and working in management consulting, Hankowski came back to the aggregates industry to work for several member companies. He then came back to his hometown to work for a year before attending business school. However, nearly 15 years later, he can still be found at All States Materials Groups.

"The nation’s roads, dams, infrastructure and pipelines all depend on the materials we provide," said Hankowski. "And now I can’t imagine working anywhere else."

His role has him frequently on the road, working in the company’s multiple locations and touching base with customers and suppliers. He cites his early involvement with NSSGA as one of the drivers of his career in the aggregates industry. He first became involved with NSSGA through the popular Young Leaders program—attending the 2007 Orlando annual meeting. Through the program, he made lifelong connections and friends whom he still works with today.

"The Young Leaders program gives you a tremendous opportunity to learn the industry, grow your professional networks and learn from each other," said Hankowski. "There’s so much camaraderie in Young Leaders and I’ve made lifelong friends. And who knows, eventually you might lead the whole association."

After serving as a member of the steering committee, he eventually rose through the ranks to become the Young Leaders Chair. He also went on to join other Committees of interest, becoming the Communications Committee Chair and serving on the Executive Committee. He was then elected to an officer position and throughout the past several years has moved up the ranks.

During his acceptance speech, he encouraged all members to harness the energy created from the Annual Meeting and become more involved with NSSGA. He especially emphasized for smaller producers, like himself, to share the benefits of membership with others and to get to know the NSSGA staff.

"It’s an exciting time to be in the aggregates industry, as we all know infrastructure funding provides opportunities," said NSSGA 2023 Board Chair Seth Hankowski. "On top of that, our association is establishing stronger partnerships and communicating and collaborating in exciting new ways."

The meeting also featured the reveal of the NSSGA Strategic Plan for 2023-2025. Hankowski and NSSGA President & CEO Michael Johnson talked through the plan with members and highlighted the four main pillars. These include:

  • Proactively addressing regulatory threats.

  • Effectively promoting the industry’s image.

  • Focusing on Advocacy as Job #1, which includes the support of ROCKPAC.

  • Reactivating the Rocks Build America Foundation to help fund industry education and branding.

  • These pillars are the backbone of the new strategic plan and will guide the tactics that the association will tackle in the years to come. Hankowski also highlighted specific member challenges that, regardless of size, the entire industry shares.

"Our members are very much concerned about the onerous effects that federal and state regulations have on their businesses," said Hankowski. "We need to address regulatory threats proactively and effectively now and continue this practice for years to come.

As the Annual Convention marks the changing of NSSGA leadership, Hankowski is eager to get started and carry on with the implementation of the association’s plan.

"Even though we do have multiple challenges on the horizon, I am ready to tackle these issues and lead the association to create a better, stronger NSSGA and future for our industry."
