The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) sent a missive to its members regarding the association’s new Strategic Plan: “The aggregates industry has never been more important to America’s future. Every highway, bridge, airport, water system, energy project, manufacturing facility and community depends on the materials our members produce. As the operating environment continues to evolve, NSSGA is focused on ensuring our association remains the strongest possible advocate and partner for you and your business.
In sea turtle conservation circles, we speak of shifting baselines to correct our perception of statistics. If the number of leatherback turtle nests on Florida beaches totals 2,012 for the 2025 season, we’re thankful for the increase from 1,799 nests during the 2024 season. But our baseline is off. It has shifted from the arribadas of the 1950s, which brought multiple thousands of nests to the shores of Florida and in the Caribbean. By exploring the shifting baseline, we see the current bleak numbers are indicative of an endangered species.
